Nehemiah turns out the mixed multitude
Israel was a peculiar people, and not to mingle with the nations. See the benefit of publicly reading the word of God; when it is duly attended to, it discovers to us sin and duty, good and evil, and shows wherein we have erred. We profit, when we are thus wrought upon to separate from evil. Those that would drive sin out of their hearts, the living temples, must throw out its household stuff, and all the provision made for it; and take away all the things that are the food and fuel of lust; this is really to mortify it. When sin is cast out of the heart by repentance, let the blood of Christ be applied to it by faith, then let it be furnished with the graces of God’s Spirit, for every good work.

In this last chapter of Nehemiah, many improvements took place. Whenever they read the Book of Moses, they found something new. This teaches us something very important; we read a lot, know a lot but do nothing. But these people were zealous, whenever they read a new commandment; they applied it in their lives, so they developed spiritually very quickly because of their obedience to the commandments of God.
Ammon and Moab are two troublesome personalities in the history of the Old Testament and the Jewish people. We remember [Gen 19:30]-[Gen 19:38], when Lot left our father Abraham and went to Sodom and Gomorrah and in the end he left it, losing everything even his wife who became a pillar of salt. Sodom and Gomorrah were burnt. Lot’s two daughters were brought up in a bad atmosphere learning bad unnatural sexual habits from the pagans in Sodom and Gomorrah. They committed a deadly sin when they made their father drunk and slept with him. One of them gave birth to Moab and the other to Ammon. So the children of Moab and Ammon became the symbol of evil because they came to the world by evil doing and pagan ways. There was always an enmity between the Jews on the one hand, and the Moabites and the Ammonites on the other. When the Jews deviated from God, they mixed with their neighbours and married from among them. They took the daughters of Moab and Ammon and did not lead a spiritual life.
After 400 years, God spoke to Moses and told him that the Ammonites and the Moabites were not to mix with the people of God forever.

The children of Moab and Ammon were against the people of God, they tried to hinder their passage with Moses in Sinai.
The story of Balaam was mentioned in Numbers 22, 23 and 24. Balak, king of Moab was worried because of the large number of the people of Israel, so he sent to Balaam saying: “therefore, please come at once, curse this people for me, for they are too mighty for me. Perhaps I shall be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land, for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.” [Num 22:6]
Balak sent for Balaam to come and curse the people, who were greater than him. He wanted to break them and drive them out of the land. Balaam refused at first because God said to him “You shall not go with them; you shall not curse the people, for they are blessed.” [Num 22:12] Balak called him again, so God said to Balaam: “If the men come to call you, rise and go with them; but only the word which I speak to you – that you shall do.” [Num 22:20]
Balaam went but did not curse the people, he blessed them four times but in the end he advised the king of Moab to try and distract them from God by making them sin with pagan girls, then God will be angry with them. Balaam’s advice was very bad and showed corruption, and obscenity.

Nehemiah organised everything and put everything in order. He went back to the king of Babylon Artaxerxes but his heart was in Jerusalem. After a while, he took the king’s permission to go back to Jerusalem once more to serve . Nehemiah might have been away for a few months, during which time Eliashls gave Tobiah the holy place where they kept the offerings, the frankincense, the articles of the house of God, to use as a storeroom for himself.
Tobiah the Ammonite official was one of the three evil men: Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammomite official, and Gesham the Arab.
This is the worst that anyone can do, to trade religious matters for material gain which cheapens holy matters in the eyes of the people and makes the temple lose its holiness and awe. When Nehemiah knew what happened, he was very angry and removed all the household goods of Tobiah from the storeroom of the house of God, cleansed it and returned the articles, the offerings and frankincense, as our LORD Jesus Christ did: “Then He went into the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in it, saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house is a house of prayer’, but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’”” [Luke 19:45]-[Luke 19:46]

1On that day they read in the book of Moses in the audience of the people; and therein was found written, that the Ammonite and the Moabite should not come into the congregation of God for ever;2Because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, that he should curse them: howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing.3Now it came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude.4And before this, Eliashib the priest, having the oversight of the chamber of the house of our God, [was] allied unto Tobiah:5And he had prepared for him a great chamber, where aforetime they laid the meat offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the corn, the new wine, and the oil, which was commanded [to be given] to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the offerings of the priests.6But in all this [time] was not I at Jerusalem: for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon came I unto the king, and after certain days obtained I leave of the king:7And I came to Jerusalem, and understood of the evil that Eliashib did for Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.8And it grieved me sore: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the chamber.9Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers: and thither brought I again the vessels of the house of God, with the meat offering and the frankincense.

Nehemiah 13:9 Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers: and thither brought I again the vessels of the house of God, with the meat offering and the frankincense.

Nehemiah 13:10 And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given [them]: for the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field.
Nehemiah’s reform in the house of God
If a sacred character will not keep men from setting an evil example, it must not shelter any one from deserved blame and punishment. The Levites had been wronged; their portions had not been given them. They were gone to get livelihoods for themselves and their families, for their profession would not maintain them. A maintenance not sufficient, makes a poor ministry. The work is neglected, because the workmen are. Nehemiah laid the fault upon the rulers. Both ministers and people, who forsake religion and the services of it, and magistrates, who do not what they can to keep them to it, will have much to answer for. He delayed not to bring the Levites to their places again, and that just payment should be made. Nehemiah on every occasion looked up to God, and committed himself and all his affairs to Him. It pleased him to think that he had been of use to revive and support religion in his country. He here refers to God, not in pride, but with a humble appeal concerning his honest intention in what he had done. He prays, "Remember me;" not, Reward me. "Wipe not out my good deeds;" not, Publish them, or record them. Yet he was rewarded, and his good deeds recorded. God does more than we are able to ask.

Although Nehemiah was absent for a short period, all the little foxes that were afraid of him tried to compromise the truth. They did not send the portions of the Levites which were given by the tribes to them, so the Levites had to go back to work in the fields. All that Nehemiah built in two years was threatened to be destroyed because of his absence. It shows that the presence of a strong leader is necessary for the work to continue.

Nehemiah blamed the leaders strongly, for neglecting the house of God and allowing it to be robbed after he had organised it all and kept it under control. He started re-organising everything starting by the tribe of Judah (his own tribe) so that no one would accuse him of favouring one tribe to another. This prayer comes from the heart of a humble servant asking God not to wipe out his good deeds. Anyone who offers a service to the house of God, no matter how small it is, it will be considered and will be rewarded by God. The work in the house of God needs many servants, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the labourers are few.” [Matt 9:37]

Nehemiah 13:15 In those days saw I in Judah [some] treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all [manner of] burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified [against them] in the day wherein they sold victuals.
Sabbath-breaking restrained
The keeping holy the Lord’s day forms an important object for their attention who would promote true godliness. Religion never prospers while Sabbaths are trodden under foot. No wonder there was a general decay of religion, and corruption of manners among the Jews, when they forsook the sanctuary and profaned the Sabbath. Those little consider what an evil they do, who profane the Sabbath. We must answer for the sins others are led to commit by our example. Nehemiah charges it on them as an evil thing, for so it is, proceeding from contempt of God and our own souls. He shows that Sabbath-breaking was one of the sins for which God had brought judgments upon them; and if they did not take warning, but returned to the same sins again, they had to expect further judgments. The courage, zeal, and prudence of Nehemiah in this matter, are recorded for us to do likewise; and we have reason to think, that the cure he wrought was lasting. He felt and confessed himself a sinner, who could demand nothing from God as justice, when he thus cried unto him for mercy.

From that time forth came they no [more] on the sabbath.22And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and [that] they should come [and] keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, [concerning] this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy.

One of the last improvements that Nehemiah carried out was to bring back the dignity of the Sabbath according to the Law. Due to the lack of wine presses, the workers were treading on the grapes, collecting sheaves, loading donkeys, farming and selling on the Sabbath. Men of Tyre (who were not Jews) also took advantage of this to deal and profit on the Sabbath. Nehemiah confronted them and blamed those who were responsible, reminding them of how their fathers broke the Sabbath and invited God’s wrath. They were repeating their fathers’ mistake and they must face the consequences.
Keeping Sunday as a holy day for God is a very important commandment. Sunday remains a day for God, a day for the Mass Service, for having communion, reading the Bible and serving God.

He felt and confessed himself a sinner, who could demand nothing from God as justice, when he thus cried unto him for mercy.

15In those days saw I in Judah [some] treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all [manner of] burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified [against them] in the day wherein they sold victuals.16There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.17Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing [is] this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day?18Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath.19And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and [some] of my servants set I at the gates, [that] there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day.20So the merchants and sellers of all kind of ware lodged without Jerusalem once or twice.21Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do [so] again, I will lay hands on you.

Nehemiah 13:17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing [is] this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day?
Sabbath-breaking restrained
The keeping holy the Lord’s day forms an important object for their attention who would promote true godliness. Religion never prospers while Sabbaths are trodden under foot. No wonder there was a general decay of religion, and corruption of manners among the Jews, when they forsook the sanctuary and profaned the Sabbath. Those little consider what an evil they do, who profane the Sabbath. We must answer for the sins others are led to commit by our example. Nehemiah charges it on them as an evil thing, for so it is, proceeding from contempt of God and our own souls. Nehemiah was firm and courageous. On Friday at sunset, he ordered the guards and the porters to shut all doors for 24 hours. On “Saturday”, no one was allowed to enter or go out, nor buy nor sell. Those who broke the Sabbath by buying and selling waited outside for 24 hours. This was repeated for one or two weeks but Nehemiah warned them that he would arrest them if they continued waiting by the doors on the Sabbath, so they obeyed. He commanded the Levites to guard the doors and to keep the Sabbath holy without buying and selling.
Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of Your mercy!
Nehemiah used to raise his heart to God before work and ask Him to remember him for keeping the Sabbath holy. He had a modest faithful heart and expressed repentance without pride or boasting.

Nehemiah 13:23 In those days also saw I Jews [that] had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon, [and] of Moab:
The dismissal of strange wives
If either parent be ungodly, corrupt nature will unequaled the children to take after that one; which is a strong reason why Christians should not be unequaled yoked. In the education of children, great care should be taken about the government of their tongues; that they learn not the language of Ashdod, no impious or impure talk, no corrupt communication. Nehemiah showed the evil of these marriages. Some, more obstinate than the rest, he smote, that is, ordered them to be beaten by the officers according to the law, [Deut 25:2-3]. Here are Nehemiah’s prayers on this occasion. He prays, "Remember them, O my God." Lord, convince and convert them; put them in mind of what they should be and do. The best services to the public have been forgotten by those for whom they were done, therefore Nehemiah refers himself to God, to recompense him. This may well be the summary of our petitions; we need no more to make us happy than this; Remember me, O my God, for good. We may humbly hope that the Lord will remember us and our services, although, after lives of unwearied activity and usefulness, we shall still see cause to abhor ourselves and repent in dust and ashes, and to cry out with Nehemiah, Spare me, O my God, according to the greatness of thy mercy.

Nehemiah corrected something else: he found that some of the Jews married pagan women from “Ashdod, Ammon and Moab” and lived with them, and much worse than that was that they spoke with eacher in the language of the gentiles and forgot the original Jewish language. Unfortunately, this is what happens today as many are ignorant of the Coptic language and speak the language of the world

It is a great virtue in the eyes of God to be firm with the sin. As the Jews lived with people of the world, spoke their language, adopted their manners and habits, they lost their religion and the covenant between them and God. Nehemiah reminded them of Solomon, king of Israel, who was God’s beloved; there was no one like him. He was very spiritual, very wise and wrote the chapters of wisdom, but he committed the same sin towards the end of his life: he took pagan wives, who deviated his heart from worshipping God and he was about to perish because of his sin, but God made him repent by the intercession of David, his father.

If every one of us had Nehemiah’s heart, we could correct many things and if we kept every word in the Holy Book, no matter what, the Church would be strong again and would have walls. Nehemiah, the spiritually zealous man of prayer, faithful, hard working, persevering never thought of his own good. We need such a spirit, so that the Church returns to its strength and beauty and becomes faultless.
“That He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.” [Eph 5:27]

30Thus cleansed I them from all strangers, and appointed the wards of the priests and the Levites, every one in his business;31And for the wood offering, at times appointed, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.

Nehemiah 13:31 And for the wood offering, at times appointed, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.
Verses that belong to this explanation: 23-31
23In those days also saw I Jews [that] had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon, [and] of Moab:24And their children spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews' language, but according to the language of each people.25And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, [saying], Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves.26Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did outlandish women cause to sin.27Shall we then hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to transgress against our God in marrying strange wives?28And [one] of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, [was] son in law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me.29Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.30Thus cleansed I them from all strangers, and appointed the wards of the priests and the Levites, every one in his business;31And for the wood offering, at times appointed, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.
